Tooth wear is the biggest issue after gum disease and tooth decay. It is one of the reasons why we try as hard so hard to retain as many natural teeth as possible. With the exception of wisdom teeth and those required to gain space for orthodontic braces we rarely remove teeth unless they are loose through periodontal disease (gum disease where the bone supporting the teeth has disappeared). Initially, and depending on the severity of the tooth wear or pain, we construct mouth guards. These are normally worn just at night-time, allowing us to control the pain and reduce the tooth wear. We have a third generation electronic blue tooth machine called “The Grindcare” which is our treatment of first choice as not only is it diagnostic, it registers every grind when worn but it also offers the facility to change to Bio feedback mode and can be used to treat Bruxism (excessive clenching or grinding of the teeth) in those that do not want to wear a splint inside their mouth.
